Re: [Killietalk] Disinfection Questions
OK, Sandy,
Everyone has had a shot at it.
For all bacteria but myco, I use chlorine bleach, usually diluted 19:1.
That has minimal damage to nets, etc. /Mycobacterium marinim/ needs
alcohol or acetone to dissolve its protective wax coating, before you
can kill it.
For snail eggs on plants and most invertibrate parasites, I like a brief
soak in Epsom salts solution. [Caution, some plants may vote against
this abuse.]
That said, 99% of my real efforts are to dry nets and equipment well
before transferring to another tank. That is the cost-effective way to
stop the transfer of most common fish pathogens. Buy lots of nets. Let
them stand upright in a glass or vase to dry between uses. Pretty simple
and it really works. [May be pretty worthless in humid tropical places,
but works like gangbusters in the high desert!]
I never, ever disinfect a working filter. A brief rinse in tap water is
as much as I'll do, once it has a load of beneficial bacteria working.
IME, filters don't seem likely to transfer bad bugs, anyway.
