Re: [Killietalk] Food Slurry a raging Success!

Interesting...
I do "Something" like that...Only thing I do different is I feed the "sludge
tank" commercial food, then feed the more inert sludge to the fry...
One thing that has long worked for me is to clean the sides of my tanks with
polyester filter floss...if you wipe the sides of your tank and carefully
slide it out, you'll have all kinds of goodies for the fry to eat... I
simply toss that in the container w/fry and change it out every day or
so...Won't work in a heavily planted tank or one that already has fry
present..but for those nasty slimy gularis tanks, etc, the fauna I capture
looks pretty diverse...

Also water siphoned just off the top of our peat containers has "things" in
it, so basically I lift my flowerpots out, gently pour off that water and
check it out in a clear glass...its usually swarming with critters...

Eratta:
I use "Fry boxes" mostly, but I also use "controled sludge" so to speak for
the few chrome's & epi's I got...I actually have some in fry boxes and some
fry in a breeding net in with the parents...I kinda had to prove to myself
the oft mentioned "fry grow faster w/parents" is true/not true...
Well the results are beyond ancedotal for BIT anyway...the BIT "in
w/parents" are about 25-50% bigger more or less. Mostly all they get is BBS
& "funk" from a few containers I culture just for that purpose...

Joseph,
Very much so. I also have bred Ellasoma okephanokee in a similar fashion. I
have even used a gallon jar for a pair, choked with Java moss of course as
you advocated.
I think these natural setups we have been discussing are a great way to
breed and maintain a species with very little effort etc on our part. We do
not have to pick eggs or worry about egg incubation. In the Dario and Badis
species Study group we strongly advocate this type of setup for beginners as
it is very easy to have success with. I think some species of fish are
especially good candidates.

I also have found many Ellasoma sp do not bother with fry especially when
well fed. I tend to use only live food in these little setups and I feel it
keeps my maintenance duty to a minimum.

I am considering setting up some low light heavily shaded natural setups for
potentially working with Diapterons. My biggest concern right now is how
much light. Diapterons really seem to prefer a dark shaded environment. With
many timid fish I have found a cover of floating plants to give them a sense
of security so I hope the floating plants will maybe offset the higher light
levels. I have only ever kept Diapterons in very dark tanks so this is of
interest to me. As soon as I get something setup I hope to give this a try.
