Re: [Killietalk] Disinfection Questions

For me, I've not reused any of the peat at all. Since peat isn't
that expensive and I need peat to incubate the eggs and have them
hatched, I don't see the need to reuse them.

As for other aquarium equipment like sponge filters, mops and turkey
baxters, I'd usually wash them thoroughly, and put them into water
and microwave them for 15 minutes.

I'd usually use the turkey busters to remove uneaten food or to
change the water of the fry grow out containers, and I make sure that
I don't reuse them on any other containers or tanks without first
microwaving them. For this, I've got half a dozen of these busters
and syringes so that I have enough to rotate without having to try
and sterilise them a few times a day.

Once used, they're cleansed and stored in a area in my fishroom,
which is furthest away from my tanks and the 'sterile' instruments/
equipment, awaiting sterilisation. This is to prevent accidental
cross-contamination, which may introduce pathogens from one tank to
the other.

At the end of the day, or once I've run out of 'clean' instruments
and equipment, I'd then proceed to sterlise them using the method
mentioned above.

Having a real close encounter with SARS and working as a medical
practictioner, I can't be too careful these days, and thus have
carried such practices to my fishkeeping hobby. :-)

Cheers,

Kenny
