Re: [Killietalk] CD project
Seems to me, the project was being done before but was going to slow for
some of the members and now Barry is looking into an organized, shared
volunteer based system to complete a modest section, or sample of JAKAS, a
decades worth I understand. The real problem with this project is members
expectations of volunteer timeliness has forced the hand of some kind of mob
mentality that we need ALL the JAKAS available by tomorrow at 3 pm in a
professional format at a cost, as Wright has pointed out is an expense that
is questionable or even unnecessary.
I say, think small, but regular project's over the next 5-10 years that
would get this mammoth project done! Of course, of what format this beast
should be in has shown, there are many hurdles which we have to figure out
first. I would keep it simple. If there is a resource to show the change of
taxonomy, lets let the masses use that and save the JAKAS for posterity, not
accuracy.
And a last note, I think this project is very important. Is it in the top
150? Do we need to save the History of our organization? I think we should.
That doesn't mean we need to spend our whole allowance on this in one big
project, but mealy concentrate on the fact that we can do it with volunteers
and it can be done in a reasonable amount of time. This not only shows our
ability to work together, like we have so many times before, but it will
keep the cost down and give a sense of pride that we could keep this project
in house, unlike other huge organization like the ACA.
Just some further thoughts...
