Re: [Killietalk] Baby Brine Shrimp
John,
Although I appreciate the plug for the Beginners Guide. I would guess
you may not have yours yet and an answer on killietalk is what you
wanted, so here goes.
First, it really depends on what sort of hatching system/container you
use. For me, I use the 2l soda bottle method with the little $4.95 base
that's available from various catalogues. I think Jhemco has them. When
I shut off the air-stone, the shrimp gather at the bottom near the air
inlet. Then after a few minutes for everything to settle, I just take
the airline end originally attached to the outlet and let the whole
solution siphon through it into a pitcher. Then I pour that back into
the hatching bottle THROUGH a brine shrimp net. This is like a regular
small net but with fine cloth in place of the netting. The shrimp are
caught there; I just dump that mass into a small cup of fresh water
which serves as a rinse and feed with an eye dropper.
I add another 1/4 tsp of shrimp to the hatcher and collect in the same
way the next day. If you get the temperature right (high 70's) this
whole process works on a nice 24 hour cycle and you have fresh BBS every
evening at feeding time. The whole draining procedure takes about 5
minutes and most of that time is for the shrimp to settle once the air
is turned off. During that period I'm feeding the rest of the tanks with
their "adult food".
Yes, I get a few eggs in the feeding cup this way and although they can
accumulate in the tanks and get unsightly, they are not a major problem.
If there's anything else we can help with just ask.
Edd Kray
PS: I find it important to drain ALL the freshly hatched BBS out each
night. If I don't then the water in the hatcher WILL foul, all the
remaining BBS will die, and you need to start with fresh clean hatching
solution rather than reusing the brine.

Subject: [Killietalk] Baby Brine Shrimp
Hi All,
I have a Baby Brine Shrimp based question for you.
How do you extract the BBS from your incubator?
At the moment I'm using a pipette, which isn't desirable, as I take some
water with it...
Also, how much BBS should I be feeding my fry?
Many Thanks,
John
