[Killietalk] Another Scanning Job of AKA literature: Arnold and Ahl
Hi Tony,
Just wanted to remind you that I have both the xerox copy of the complete Arnold and Ahl book that Klee used to make the AKA edition and, more importantly, I have the actual Arnold and Ahl 1936 book in perfect condition. If you'd like to replace the old images with scanned pages from the actual German text on photo quality paper let me know as I can easily make those copies. WWII prevented Arnold (Ahl was a Nazi who perished in the war) from publishing a second edition and even after the war he could not get a revised and enlarged edition published in post-war Germany -- and Innes offered to supply the paper at little or no cost for the print job! What might have become one of the often re-printed standard reference guides of the hobby as authored by one of the men who truly made the hobby was allowed to disappear with only one fantastic edition. It would have been the German "Innes book".(Arnold received in 1905 the first shipment of live West African Aphyosemions into!
the
aquarium hobby and it contained arnoldi and sjoestedti among others.)

Hi all,
I am looking for someone to volunteer to help complete a project I
started as a part of making literature available to the AKA.
In the mid 60's the AKA published the English translation of the
Killifish section of the Arnold and Ahl book written in German. This was
Edited by Al Klee, Bob Goldstein, and George Meyers........... it was done
on a mimeograph machine and contained the text and images from the
material. It has long since been unavailable.
Well, with the help of some members, I have scanned all of the
text in and also the images in separate files. The scanning is done.
Now with all of the talk about wanting to help, perhaps someone
can finish the project... next steps, :
Clean up the text and correct errors in the OCR scanning.
Clean up the images from the scanned jpegs
put the text and images back together ..... probably in word format.
convert the entire document to PDF (will require a full version
of Acrobat)
Create a master CD for duplication.
I will be willing to help finish the work by supplying the original scanned
material and also proofreading as the work moves forward.............. I
do not have time to finish this as I am involved in too many other
projects .. Now that I am retired, I wonder how I ever had time to work!!!
This work has been done without financial support from the AKA ( I
didn't ask, nor want it) and when done would simply be presented to the
BOT. They would then decide what should be done regarding sale and
distribution . hard copy only, CD only, a combination............ they
would also set all pricing for the work.
It is a very small task when compared to all of the JAKA's, but
may give an indication of how valuable historic literature is without
investing any large dollars. I personally believe that material like
Arnold and Ahl's Translation, plus the English translation of Boulenger's
Catalogue that the AKA did in the 60's are very worthwhile investing time
and effort in .... just to make the historic information available to a
larger market..............
Thoughts, comments, and more important................. Anyone
want to help ????
