Re: [Killietalk] Dividing tanks? and show me your fish rooms

Just to chime in there for a few info bits...

-Some of that stuff looks very similar to Hydroponics hardware; especially
the channels & caps...Hmmmm.....

-Speaking of Hydroponics: I have a 400W HPS light, so I was thinking about
to running of my tank outlets across 4ft of water lettuce, "edible lettuce"
or water cress (anything req a low nutrient load)...I've done this before on
a smaller scale; won't totally end water changes, but set up right & given
enough light, the plants will indeed strip pretty much any nitrogen out of
the water (2ea 4ft shop lights @ 160W/ on a 4ft lenght will work similarly,
albeit less efficiently with water sprite, ect)

Sounds like a bother, but stripping nitrogen in "real time" has noticeable
advantages over the "seesaw" effect of 25% "weekly's", not suggesting I
don't still change the water, but the "fresh water" is not all that
dissimilar from the old-tank water...considering it's a "closed system", a
"veggie filter" almost approaches continuous drip in benefits...***and BTW,
perhaps that setup would be nice for those killies that req a dark tank

***BTW ptII: speaking of nitrate removal....currently I'm blasting some
tanks w/80 watts of cool white @ 6" from the surface (any closer and the
water sprite leaves become too "pinnate"...you loose some shading)...not a
speck of algae in 10gals w/heavy feeding. Bright, but fish seem very
comfortable: (these are simps & some Fundulopanchax)

- I'm sure it's been mentioned before...but yeah, I found out from my reef
days, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives to true bio-balls: PVC bail,
wiffle balls, shredded foam, lava rock, cut up air-line tube, "sanded" vinyl
tube, cut-up pvc pipe...basically anything inert w/a semi-rough surface &
some void space...

Lisa, I partition my setups owing to lack of space and have some thoughts to
share with you. Apply whatever makes sense.

4-tier Fish Rack
http://www.killiesconnection.com/page2-10.htm
This setup has adjustable partitions which I used for breeding annuals.
  Not fry-proof.

3tier 4feet Internal Overflow (IOS) tank setup
http://www.killies.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1808
From a LFS relocation sale. Works great for non-annuals but as a
safeguard, only one species from each genus per tier.

Hamburger Matten Filter & Styrene tank covers
http://www.killies.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=620
If you're looking for covers, I adapted these from Lorraine's fishroom.
Instead of little balls, a loop of cable-ties works just as well.

Good luck and have fun,
