[Killietalk] lampeyes again

I have some fish growing out in a 40-long, but once they're done, i want to make it a display tank. I like the idea of a large school of some kind of lampeye. ARE there any species that don't have a positively glacial growth rate, or at least get to a decent size in a few weeks where they'll look presentable? Also, how crucial is salt for Aplocheilicthys spilauchen?(I was thinking of some Sterba cories for the bottom)

Also, an update:
I still haven't ID'd whatever was killing off my Indian ricefish. It causes the dorsal muscle to go white, spreading to the rest of the body - reminiscent of Pleistophora, but I didn't get around to doing a "squash" on any affected fish. Considering the fish are big-time grazers, a microsporidian parasite would find them an easy target. The good news is that I've had about 60 fry going for several weeks now with no sign of infection and no losses, so I think (fingers crossed) the problem is over.
