[Killietalk] Shipping fish eggs
Hello all,
I use the archives here on KT a LOT, often to get info and background on the
plethora of issues that arise...Shipping fish eggs is one of them, I got
time this week; so here is my info share for someone else doing a similar
search:
I just exchanged eggs with a fellow in Singapore (hope you don't mind
Kho)...
I know for certain he shipped me 2 bags of N.foerschi peat containing plenty
of eggs, I could see them clearly in the peat, NTM the eggs were packaged
competently and he paid dearly for FedEx delivery (only to have them held up
by customs nevertheless)...
At any rate, only 9-10 fry hatched...Unless the majority of N.foerchi eggs
are "resting" (which I've read is not the case), then something "bad" has is
happening enroute. Clearly, the shipper did all he could to ensure I got a
good batch of eggs (thanks Kho, just thought I'd balance any negative
experiences trading with Asia with a positive effort on your behalf)
Likewise, via "Global Priority", I sent him "hand counted" bags of 2
locations of Korthausae & 1 bag of guentheri...as everyone knows, there is
no logical reason to pay postage AND skimp on eggs from these prolific
nothos...Kho says only 5 guentheri fry hatched...and I'm guessing he will
likewise say the packaging was adequate (or was it?)
I said all that to say; I suppose just sometimes despite the best efforts of
both "traders", something simply damages eggs enroute (at least to & from
certain places). I don't know what can be done...
