Re: [Killietalk] A newbie with questions, and a little about me
I obtained "spotless orange" australe from Karl H. Walter, a German aquarist
who lives in Canada at West Coast Weekend, a killifish show held yearly on
the west coast, in 2004. He told me that he had recieved some orange autrale
from a lady(name unknown) on the East Coast with a reduced number of spots and
attempted, through selection, to breed out the spots.
The fish in my tanks do not breed 100% "spotless orange." Some males are
"spotless" with white lyretales. Some have the normal maroon lyres. Others have
spots.
The original australe was a brown fish and the orange was a sport that
occurs occasionally in spawns. I assume but don't know whether the orange pops up
in nature. Several new populations of australe have been collected in recent
years. The ones I've seen had the basic austale pattern pattern( red spots,
lyretale, etc) on a dark body.
Although results with australe can vary, most consider it easy. Some have
problems. I usually spawn about three pair in a small tank, around 5 gals with a
sponge filter and lots of spawning mops.
