Hi Everyone,
There's been talk recently about fishrooms, building
stands and drilling tanks but there's one topic that I've been battling with
over the year and thats stale, stinking fishroom air. My room doesn't have a
fish smell at all! How do all you guys that have warm fishrooms with
hundreds of tanks deal with this. I'm used to the smell so I really don't
smell it(well, just a bit)but visitors who are not can smell it immediately.
All help is greatly appreciated!

Best regards,
Gary

Of course, I only do that for the ends of five and ten gallon tanks.

Hi all, if that is air-conditioned fish room, doing that maybe
expensive. Came across this website, their product sounds like something
you need.
But i have not try that. Not sure whether it is of any use. Else dried
"Pandan" leaf (malaysia/ singapore/ indonesia plant) would do the trick.
I am sure Lavender and other scented plants would do the same too.

Let us know if it is good. I was worrying about the shipping cost as it
is more than the item cost itself.

Hello All,

Although I have bred this fish for many years with varying degrees of
success, I was successful in hatching at least 30 fry from peat which
had been stored (forgotten) for about a year. Any advise as to the
feeding (green water ?) and/or dividing them up into (perhaps) groups of
6 or less to insure a good sex ratio. In the past; when I didn't break
them up into small groups for rearing; I got almost all males (:-( .

Any gut feeling that not all annual eggs sink when the peat is wetted
? In the above case; peat which was netted off the top (after stirring
well several times for an hour of so) and placed into yet another tank,
produced at least half a dozen fry. I do plan upon collecting most fry
to rearing tank(s) , collect and redrying the peat, and rewetting it in
about two months. Perhaps several times.

Tanks,

Even a fan will make a difference, by reducing the amount of condensation resting on walls, shelves, etc. Try one of those electrostatic air cleaners - the ozone will oxidize many odor causing compounds. There's been concern over high levels of ozone produced by these things, but you can always put it on a timer.

My fishroom is in the middle of a finished basement with no windows. The
furnace, hot water heater, and my workshop are part of the space. When
we did the basement the HVAC contractor advised us to install an exhaust
fan with an outside air return to remove moisture and provide combustion
oxygen for the two flame sources. The house is 10 years old and fairly
tight to outside air. His concern was moisture condensing on the attic
walls and roof that would lead to mould, etc. I contain about 950
gallons of water in the room, most aerated and some in two recirculating
systems. I change 30-40% of the water each week in all containers. I
have two floor fans circulating air in the room to even the temperature
gradient floor to ceiling and keep me comfortable. All containers have
glass or polycarbonate covers.

I tried using the exhaust system until the cold weather hit the first
year and the sytem lowered the temperature too much. I checked all
winter (Ohio) in the attic and saw no frost. I use the exhaust very
sporadically and continue to monitor the attic each winter. Still no
frost. We've had no mention of and odor in the rest of the house
(believe me, my sister-in-law would tell me if there was!). My guess is
that the reason is the frequency of water changes. Periodically, I
notice the usual odor from a heavily planted tank that reminds me of the
tropical fish store I hung around as a kid. Mix some of that with sloppy
artemia culturing and I could get my hobby kicked out of the house.

My guess is that Dr. Harrison's sage advice about water changes is more
than about environmental control inside the tanks.

The biggest problem I'm aware of with odors in the fishroom are the rich
dry foods stored there. They can be really stinky to someone who has not
become acclimated to them. Seal in ziplocks and store in the
refrigerator to avoid this particular source of odor.
