Kinda gets the old heart pumping a little quicker, don't it?  That happened to me a couple of times. With a good quality tempered glass, sometimes you can tell by shining a flashlight at about a 45 degree angle and looking across the surface. If you see little rainbows, DON'T try to cut it. Get a piece of glass you know is plate and a a piece of glass you know is tempered, put them side by side and compare with this little test.
