Re: [Killietalk] Substrate for breeding Nothobranchius?

With my FIRST killies, I used to poke around at garden centers until I found a good Canadian peat with little or no soil in it. I'd boil it for an hour (not a smell that wives/girlfriends find appealing), drain it through a strainer and rinse with cold water, and then soak it overnight in a rubbermaid bin of tap water, THEN move it to a 30 gal bucket full of water and an airstone. The main goal was peat water, but it also gave me a nice-looking substrate for tanks. That was a LOT of smelly, messy work, but OTOH it gave me a lot of peat I could use in tanks, w/ herps, etc. Lee H. and other KKG guys got me into the Jiffy #7 peat pellets - they worked well (when I used them - I'm not the annual fan I was).
