Re: [Killietalk] RE:worms and hot weather

Add some calcium carbonate (lime Powder for gardens) to the worm dirt to keep it from going bad. It neutralizes the urine acid from the worms.

Dear Ed et al.,

It's really hot here in Oklahoma and I eventually bought a wine cooler, in
which to keep my worms. After buying it I discovered if I put my whiteworm
containers on top of my freezer they were cool enough. I have a >10 year
old, cheap walmart freezer and the door insulation isn't so good anymore.

Grindals are doing well in the heat, 74 - 78 inside the house but I've had
to dump and replace 2/3 of the bedding as it seems to sour very fast.

A freezer lid is a lot cheaper than buying a wine cooler.

Earl;

Subject: [Killietalk] Beef heart

Hi all. The weather here in upstate New York has been terribly hot this
season. My worm cultures are doing terrible but still alive. I have no
air conditioning. Because I don't have much to offer the fish I have, I
bought some beef heart @ $69 / lb. and ground it up for them. None of the
fish really seemed to like it. The majority of them just spit it out after
a few tastes.
Right now all I have available is BBS, mosquito larvae, and fruit flies.
They don't even like the dried flake food. Any suggestions? Thanks. Ed
Brandt ( P.S. - If they don't like the beef heart I might as well feed it
to the stray cat in the area. I live in the middle of nothing in the
country with hard well water.) Join the AKA at
