Re: [Killietalk] AKA site

Thank you for your comments.

It is not possible to have every item at the root level of the menus, otherwise the list would stretch to the floor. Furthermore, I think you are suggesting further collapse of the list of menu option on the left of the page. That would only exacerbate the problem of visibility. Recognizing that some items "hidden" as submenus should be easy to find, I added the navigation bar at the top of the pages, some time ago. Again, there is a limit to how many items I put there. I chose those that I think are most important, such as Join the AKA, Conventions, Killietalk, Beginners Guide, etc. Frankly, I don't understand why AKA members are so desperate to have the F&EL online. Everyone gets it.

I suspect that young members or potential members would have less problems using the site than older members. They are the "computer generation" after all.

If you had tried searching for Fish & Egg Listing you would have got plenty of hits. It happens that F&EL does not occur on the site as a search text string. Admittedly, the one thing I'd like to see in the search screen is a box to check "all" so that you don't have to click each section of the site. The modules used on the site are, for the most part, provided by other contributors to the Xoops user community. They are free, and "you get what you pay for" but most authors will respond to requests to add features. I will try to do something about that.

Regarding searching for Koran, you definitely did something different to what you describe. I did exactly that and it returned Mr. Koran's record and no other. In fact, you don't even have to specify "AKA Members", just search for last name or even login (the default). Other members are welcome to try that to see for themselves.

I am not bent out of shape about your comments. Feedback is welcome and, as I have many times in the past, I will respond to it appropriately, with the caveat that changes suggested are not always possible. Your comments were polite, without sarcasm, unlike certain other posts.

The CMS on which the site is built has recently been upgraded, offering many new tools that will eventually benefit the AKA site. We will be rebuilding the site under that system, making improvements as we go along. That will take several weeks of work, so you won't see it immediately.

All this static over the site and some perceived slights against Barry made me decide to click around there once more.

It is replete with information, but to be honest, it could DEFINITELY use some tweaking in the usability department. Where IS the current F&EL on the site, again? Never mind, I found it under General Content, but only after spending several frustrating minutes looking in Member Content. Perhaps if we collapsed the number of categories in the main menu? It seems to me that someone new to the site could find it daunting to navigate. It could cost us some new members perhaps, particularly the younger hobbyists we so desperately need.

FWIW, using the search function, a search for "F&EL" turned up no results, nor did "F & EL.". I tried the "find member" function on Mr. Koran. Selecting "AKA Members" and "Last Name," the keyword "Koran" brought no results. Ditto for a search for FORMER CHAIRMAN Lee Harper.

Now, since Barry is NOT the site, and is in fact the webmaster, there is no need for anyone to to take the preceding as an insult to ANYONE. It's obvious that Barry puts a lot of time and effort into the site. That doesn't mean suggestions for improvements can't be made. Maybe the "evolving toward less and less usefulness" comment was out of line, maybe not - I don't care, honestly. The comment was about the site, not Barry.

I would like to say that I do appreciate the work Barry does - he even takes the time to respond to individual queries, and how many of us have time for that? So take what I've written above for what it is: Feedback on the site. Do what you will with it. Except for one thing - namely, don't get bent out of shape about it, folks.
