Re: [Killietalk] Microworm cultures

Ed,

Here is how I deal with microworms...

Use plain instant mashed-potato flakes. Wet so that it is thick in consistency. Add a pinch of yeast. Add some microworms and allow a few days for propagation.

If the culture gets too wet, either remove some of the liquid using a paper towel, or give the culture more ventilation. Cultures set up like this can last until the medium is used up entirely. You just have to prevent the culture from getting too wet, and also too dry.

I harvest the following ways:
A little by dipping my finger into the culture and then into the tank.
A moderate amount by putting paper towel on the culture until it is saturated... then swish the paper towel in clean water and you'll get a good amount of worms.
Heavy... place some paper towel on the surface of your culture (as above), but leave it there. Then daily use a plastic spoon to scrape the paper towel surface and dip the collected worms into clean water. This method collects tons of microworms. If you use this method, then make sure to remove the paper towel from the culture if you are not planning on harvesting for a week or more.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi all, I got my first microworm culture in years this last October and have been able to establish new cultures. Suddenly, every culture I've tried to start in the last 2 months have soured or gotten too watery. Any suggestions. Ed Brandt
