Sorry about that I forgot gotta go down and shoot some now but the puter
goes to the shop at 11:30 to have a larger hard drive installed and more
memory, darn I wish they could install more memory in my head because it is
empty. (there said it for you Dave K)

Subject: [Killietalk] Fish Room
My fish room design question has certainly generated a lot of good fish
talk. Thank you to everyone who contributed ideas. I was looking forward to
Al's pics he said he would have at 4:30 this morning. Got up early for that
one. There can never be enough constructive talk about how we house or
fish, and find enough space for us to live in the same house that holds our
fish. I was originally looking for the space between the racks. The 'where I
am standing' space. I think I am going to go with 36". rolling a chair over
to where one of the racks are, I find that 36" lets me bend over enough to
get to the bottom row, allows a step stool to help with getting to the top
row, and gives me enough room to get the optimum distance from the tank and
the fish to actually get to see them. The eyes only seem to work at certain
ranges, mostly at just longer than my arm length.
For the racks themselves, I am going to stay with the heavy duty racks I get
at Home Depot or Lowes. The odds of moving in the next couple of years makes
taking things down something to think about. Or the new owners might like to
buy the racks and fill them up with whatever they cart around in the
basement. I have always gotten the 36" wide ones. Makes lighting more
difficult, but it is a pretty good size for me. 4 -5 gallon tanks sideways
fit on a shelf, 3 10 gallon tanks sideways fit on a shelf, and 5-7 2 gallon
critter tanks fit on a shelf. A 20 long leaves a little space left over on a
shelf.
I have one of these 36" racks right now with 3 10's on end on the bottom
shelf, then 4 2 gallon critter tanks on the next shelf up. That brings me to
the shelf in the middle that holds the top and bottom section together. That
has 3 10s on end. Then the next shelf has 4 more 2 gallon tanks. Finally the
top shelf has 4 5's on end. Those are step stool tanks. Great place to put
the shy fish. My new basement rearranging will let me get to both sides of
this rack, allowing me to put 3 more 2 gallon critter tanks on both of the
rows now holding 2 gallon tanks. That means in a 36" by 18" rack I will have
6 10 gallon tanks, 14 2 gallon critter tanks, and 4 5 gallon tanks. That is
pretty good use of space. Other racks have similar arrangements.
If I went with the 4 ft shelves, they are 24" wide. Then I could put 2 10's
on a shelf the right way, and if I could get to both sides, the other side
would hold another 2 10's. That would be really nice. I do not know if a 4
ft shoplight would fit under the shelves of the 4 ft rack. Probably miss by
an inch or so.
I am finally going to be able to get all the tanks in the same room, close
enough to be able to get a big good air pump and not have so many little
pumps humming away as they eat the electricity. That is exciting.
