RE: [Killietalk] Futher into the morass...
Perhaps I am just lucky, but my results from fish I bought at the show are
very promising. These included N&RSC fish, show fish and sale room fish. I
brought back 19 species. To date I have fry from 9, no fry from 9 and 1
species which the fish are still too young to produce eggs. Of the 19
species, I lost specimens of 5 species but only 3 species do not have
members of both sexes represented, as I often try to purchase 2 pairs when I
can. I have fry from one of these species so only 2 of the 19 species are
functionally extinct in my fishroom. With the hot weather, my fish room has
been in the upper 70's to low 80's, and I expect that once it cools off some
of the other fish will start to produce eggs.
Sunday night I rebagged all the fish I purchased into breathable bags,
adding about 50% fresh water. All the bags were wrapped in newspaper and
packed into a small cooler. The fish were all in tanks by about 24 hours
later and I lost no fish during transit. This included a number of
lampeyes.
I am sure a number of factors come into play when bringing fish home from
the convention. I could smell that "fish in the bag too long" smell in some
of the bags I opened Sunday night, and think that rebagging the fish saved
some fish that otherwise would have died. I am also a firm believer in
breathable bags after packing my cooler full with the each bag wrapped in a
single layer of newspaper. If all the fish were in traditional bags, they
would have filled a large cooler, in breathable bags they fit in a cooler
about 12" on a side!

As further testimony to the problems of bringing home fish from the
Convention, I too, along with Dave K. have had problems with fish I bring
home from
the Convention. I do not have an explanation for this except I can add that
fish that I have gotten from people independently from the auction and fish
sale have generally done much better. These fish have had the same time in
transit and the same treatment when I get them home. The thing they are
lacking is
the time in a tank with people looking at them with flashlights or the time
in
a bag with people holding them up to look at them in the fish sale room.
Maybe
it is those people inspections that are killing the fish.
Do I believe this? No! But something is putting these fish at risk for
sure. I really would like to get other people's opinions on why this is so.
Dave
has mentioned that he does better with fish from European shows. Why is
that?
I don't think it is because they are better breeders. The fish we get
through
NRSC come from Europe and I have very poor success with them as well.
Perhaps
it is our fish bagging and transporting methods. What is different about
that?
