[Killietalk] RE: Further in the morass... even further...
Lee Harper stated...
Do I believe this? No! But something is putting these fish at risk for
sure. I really would like to get other people's opinions on why this is so.
Dave has mentioned that he does better with fish from European shows. Why is
that?
I don't think it is because they are better breeders. The fish we get through
NRSC come from Europe and I have very poor success with them as well. Perhaps
it is our fish bagging and transporting methods. What is different about
that?

One thing the DKG does is set up for their convention the Sunday before the
show. Water is conditioned and added to tanks, usually with peat added to
tanks and often plants are provided. There is an air system setup so a
bubbler is in each tank. Fish are placed in tanks as early as Tuesday and
the fish are fed live food usually. There are standard tanks and there are
glass partitions available if fish are particular aggressive. The partition
is placed diagonally across the tank so when you look into the tank you don't
see the glass but males and females are separated.
On the subject of BOT responsiveness and suggestions to the Convention
Coordination Committee, the general feedback coming back on suggesting this
mode of operation has not been positive. I had suggested possibly in terms
of how the AKA can help in the execution of the Convention by the local group
that possibly an individual familiar with the "registration/Convention"
computer software be funded to go to the Convention site as both a registrar
and exhibit organizer/minder and the AKA consider setting up the exhibition
room earlier in the week so water is conditioned and entries can be "tanked"
midweek thereby acclimated thoroughly before judging (and allowing
Conventioneers a chance to come early, drop off fish and actually vacation or
sightsee a few days before the Convention starts). Unfortunately many hotels
will not provide the fishroom space that early without significant financial
incentive and we may have to consider a traveling showroom setup including
stands and an air delivery system. I am not sure we have ever set up
restrictions on feeding fish.
The BOT in the past and I imagine currently does not think this is a viable
option but I don't think the membership has ever been surveyed on its opinion
here.
