[Killietalk] Re:Another view on show participation
I'm sort of the opposite of Lee in that I only keep a few varieties of
killies , but work with them until I'm successful. Unfortunately, then I
flood the local market and I hate the hassle of shipping fish. I'm moving
more toward SA annuals, because I can sell and ship eggs more easily, and
I can keep a large group together with little egg predation.
This last show was the first time I have entered fish, in spite of having
been involved in clubs for about 15 years. I entered 3 pairs of annuals,
mostly to donate and support the show. I wasn't surprised that they placed
low, since they were young, very breedable pairs, but winning wasn't my
goal. I doubt that I'll ship any entries to next year's convention because
it just seems like too much bother. That may seem selfish, but I just
don't have the time and inclination. If someone in our local club wants to
do the shipping (or hand carrying), I'll send fish to the show. My fish
may not be desirable enough for shipping to Europe, or even worth the
expense to ship to a domestic club, but they are healthy and vigorous. My
personal goal is to preserve these fish by raising and distributing them
in quantity. Right now my focus is Simp zonatus, since they are now
believed to be extinct in the wild. I hope that if anyone ever wants these
fish in the future, I will have them available.
Dave Koran, are S. zonatus a fish that would be worth sending to the
Eurpoean shows, or are they too ordinary for that? If you want to send
some, I'll bring them to the next KKG meeting.
