Re: [Killietalk] nauplii color?

Scott,

I do things a little different than Bill. :)

I use a 2 liter bottle 1/2 filled with salt water (yep, full strength out of Puget Sound), and toss in 1/4 tsp cysts. I keep it at 92DF, well areated, and lighted well.

I collect daily, and set everything back up in the same container for tomorrow's collection. One other thing... the saltwater has some green water algae in it, and I reuse it for at least a week before replacing the saltwater (keeping a little of the old to keep the green water).

I keep my can of cysts in the freezer (a frost-free model) with a pin hole in the plastic cover. Every now and then I take a few spoonfuls of cysts and place them into a small one cup tupperware container which I keep in the fridge. It is from the one cup tupperware that I scoop out the daily 1/4 tsp of cysts for daily hatching. When the one cup tupperware container is getting low, I replenish from the can in the freezer.

As I said, I've been using the same can for about 2 years (obviously I'm not hatching tons of bbs, but then again, I hatch all that I need on a daily basis). I learned all I know about this process from other hobbyists, so none of it is my own invention... but it works great!

Cheers,

Mark

In view of Al's poor result and an earlier mention that these eggs are from Lake Michigan...? If so, they must require (or at least tolerate) a very low-salt hatching solution, I would think.

Could it be that the NAB's require a lower saline concentration to hatch well?

Those who have used this brand successfully, what's your hatching recipe?

Thanks,

Scott

How I would rate the hatches I get for BBS. 1. Brine Shrimp Direct 90 % best
hatch 2. Jehmco 90% close to direct. in hatch but the cost is slightly
higher 3. NAB's Bought at ALA convention here in Indy were the poorest
hatching I can remember in years a total waste of my money. Like I said
that is my opinion and not that of this list.
