I know Curt Smith has had good success raising fry in twosomes to get pairs, but this is with South American annuals. Similar results have bee reported with Nothos, but I have not seen anything similar reported with the West African Aphyosemions. I have tried it with no success with Aphyosemions. It may work but not for me with whatever conditions exist in my water and food.

While the results are different with other species there is no doubt in my
mind that the biggest influence on gender is accomplished after hatching as
evidenced by the effects of isolation of fry in pairs reported by Robinson:
