RE: [Killietalk] RE: Feeding Daphnia
Dear Fishfolk,
I've been watching the feed daphnia discussion while I was on vacation.
Isn't anyone else as lazy as I am? I have a kiddie pool in a shaded corner
of the yard. I filled it with water and threw in some leaves in January.
Added a mix of D. pulex and D. magna in February and will harvest daphnia
until November. Leaves, pecans and other things fall into the pool
throughout the summer. No mice but I have had dead birds. I take some out if
they get in the way of netting daphnia.
I used to put a few dog food pellets in a nylon stocking, weigh it down with
a rock and throw that in but haven't bothered for a while. It sometimes
resulted in a bacterial bloom.
I have significant numbers of mosquito and fly larvae until June when the
city starts spraying for mosquitos. Then the daphnia take over.
I harvest every day and get a 1/4 cup of live food.
I also have a few 5 gallon pails, similarly set up that produce a lot of
bloodworms.
I dump and clean the pool in December-January.
