[Killietalk] Let The Sun Shine In!!
Hi,
One reason three famous breeders raised such highly colorful fish is that they went to the trouble to put sunlight in their fishrooms. Kirschmann the great swordtail breeder in NJ put a wall of glass bricks in his basement to capture the morning sun. Wolfsheimer installed skylights in his backyard fish house to bring the sun indoors. LaCorte used the money he made from the old "instant fish" product to redo his original fish house with sky lights and base board heating and when he moved he used Kirschmann's trick and replaced a portion of his basement walls with glass bricks. As they said in the 60's: "Let The Sun Shine In!"

Sunlight is certainly more desirable than the light we put over our tanks,
but there is a lot more to be considered. To be outside, either wild or in a
pond/tank, gives the fish access to more varied and natural diet
opportunities.
Vitamins and skin or tissue color is real. Folic acid is required for the
metabolism on the B vitamins that help melanocytes produce melanin. (in
people, from the Spring 05 Vitiligo Foundation Newsletter). Probably the
same in fish Folic Acid, Biotin, Pyrodoxine, Riboflavin shortages in fish
result in discoloration of the skin in fish. (Fish Nutrition Research
Laboratory, Ontario, Canada).
Vitamin D shortage is known to cause scoliosis (bent spines)
While our fish could certainly stand some improvements by getting some
sunlight in their lives, we can also do wonders by improving the quality and
variety of the foods we are feeding our fish.
This has become a pet project of mine over the last 6 months or so. I
started out working on a presentation on live foods for our local club,
which expanded into research on all the new frozen and dry processed foods
now available. There has been some tremendous research on fish nutrition
getting done with all the aquaculture going on around the world. And some
amazing new fish foods are now available that show some real gains visible
in my fish.
