Re: [Killietalk] On-line Roster

Lee,

I will respond to both of your messages at the same time.

First, I don't know why you had the problems you describe with the search function not responding to hitting return rather than submit. I have used all sorts of browsers on both Mac (what I usually use at home) and Windows machines (available at home at at work for testing). Other members who have worked with me on this also have not reported those problems. One other person on killietalk has already indicated that he has not had those problems. One possibility is that, if your are entering text into the search box you have to hit return once to "enter" that info, then again to do the search. On my machine it doesn't behave that way, but on some browsers it might.

I have added Zip/Postal code as a search term. That might make it easier for you and others to find members in your immediate area. As in every other search field, you can use fragments; e.g. searching for Zip=973 finds the members in my area, but there are a couple of false positives due to the fact that that number string occurs somewhere else in zip codes from other areas. Similarly, if you search for State = CA you will get about three hits for Lancashire. I feel this is a very minor inconvenience.

The online membership database has EXACTLY the same content as the membership database. Changes made to the online db are reflected immediately in the membership database, which allows members to enter changes of address etc., which are immediately available for mailing AKA publications. In other words, this search function provides an online roster that is up to date on a daily basis. To know why you feel you missed some hits, I would have to know what search terms you used and who you think the database missed. There are a couple of possibilities. One, the data is not present for that field in that person's record (incomplete data, which may be the person's own choice for that field); two, the person is not an AKA member; three, the data in that field in inaccurate (if so, we need to know so we can correct it); four, you entered inappropriate search terms for a particular field.

Regarding not seeing all the information, you have obviously not tried clicking on the person's login ID. That will bring up full information for that person, including full address and phone number, if the member has provided the latter (not all do). You can also click on the person's email address, which will open a new message to that person in your mail client. Lastly, you can sort the results by clicking on any one of the column headers, e.g. by last name, city, etc.

Members can also see their own expiration date, although not that of other members. This should be a very useful function for allowing members to check when their renewal is due.

Overall, I would have to take exception to your comment that this module is "not a very useful function". In my opinion it provides powerful search capabilities on the membership roster that we have never had before. It provides all the information about other members that a paper roster does (or a PDF for that matter). The data in the membership database is as accurate as many hours of cross checking by Dick Martino and myself can make it.

Maybe it is my browser. However, even the information I do get does not provide a mailing address or a phone number.
