RE: [Killietalk] Still new and trying Advice on gardneri

Hi there Matt and how goes?

I'm a beginner like yourself and started off with 2 pairs of Fundulopanchax
Gardneri Nigerianus "Misaje" that a local Killifish Club Member purchased
for me. I had set up a 10 gallon tank set up with Mopani Wood with Java Moss
attached, Gravel and an outside filter. I stuck in a Mop that was kindly
given to me by this same Club Member as he knew that I was starting out in
the hobby. I stuck the pair in the tank and just let nature do it's thing.

A couple weeks went by and noticed these tiny fry in the tank and after
reading up on breeding the FP's, I thought it would take about 6-8 weeks for
these guys/gals to settle in and BOOM, babies. Thank God I had some
Microworms and Baby Brine Shrimp going as I also breed/show Bettas. Every
day I was pulling eggs off the mop so all I can say is be prepared for many
babies. I know have about 8 Pairs that I will be bringing into my next
Killifish Club meeting and I hope to add some new species of Killifish. Just
be prepared to get Killifish Crazy as I now have.

I have now hatched the following species of Killifish from eggs that I
purchased off of Aquabid:

Nothobranchius Korthausae RK Red
Nothobranchius Korthausae Mafia Yellow

I have met some wonderful people off the net and am now trading what eggs
that I have so be prepared to have lots and lots of Killifish.

General rule is not to mix the species.

Good Luck and I hope to hear your story about your first breeding and
hatching attempts.

Subject: [Killietalk] Still new and trying Advice on gardneri

Hi guys,

I just wanted to get some advice and opinions. As stated before i am very
new to this and this is my first time to dive into the hobby. I am going to
the TAKO Convention in Houston where I'm from. I have selected
Fundulopanchax gardneri to start with. I was going to get 2 pairs and put
them in a well planted 10 ga. tank. My question is: is this ok? What type
of filtration do I need. I want to try breeding but do not know much about
sponge filters or what kind to get. Will sponge filters fit on to any type
of filter or is it a separate unit. I have a 10 ga. whisper unit by Tetra.
Also don't really know to much about the mop method. I do i just don't know
how to make it. I know gardneri are bottom spawners so this may not help.
The point is this is the setup that i am intending and i want to try
starting off with gardneri. Any advice would be more than grateful on any
tips or success the fellow members here at AKO have had. Also if anybody
has any specific breeder names they know in Texas or that will be at the
convention please mention them, so i know i am buying from somebody of
quality.
