Re: [Killietalk] hello
Welcome to killies Fenris. What part of the world do you hail from.? There are several wonderful national killie organizations which meet from time to time. (Last week in Maryland, at the AKA convnetion, there were lot of reasonably priced australe pairs in the fish sale room and there were several pairs which sold quite reasonably at the end of the auction.) If you are from the US, there are a number of regional killie clubs. Go to the AKA site www.aka.org , click on General Content and then Affiliate clubs. There is a good chance that there is a regional group near you. They have both reional shows and monthly or bi-monthly meetings. Usually very competant resource people are listed with them.
There is also a very dated AKA Fish and Eggs listing accessible from the AKA page. You might e-mail the parties listed there and see if they still have australe. There is also the on-line KIllie-trader. This is not my computer, so I can't toss off the addy readily, but a Google search will yield it up.
If I were you, I'd look for local sources first. (You're not in Chicagoland by any chance?) A pair of local killies in the bag is worth two pairs in the mail. ;)
You didn't mention your other aquatic specialties. If you have been breeding dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma or rainforest tetras, you are already familiar with adding some sort of demineralized water (using clean rainwater, R.O. water or something more expensive) to reduce the concentration of minerals (otherwise probably very essential) in the water. In this sense Lyretails are not a beginner's killie. There are a lot of killies (such as Aphyosemion striatum, Aphyosemion or Chromaphyosemion bivvitatum Funge or Epiplatys dageti or all sorts of Fundulopanchax gardneri) which are more likely to spawn in many seasoned taps waters. Australe gets more press than many killies and is preceived as a beginner's killie. Having been in the hobby for 90 plus years and because they are so beautiful, they are often written about and constantly popular in auctions. (Ironically they may sell for even more at general club auctions than local killie club auctions.)
Because of the need for good breeding water of a general hardness of 5-8 DH or 80 to 150 PPM I wouldn't consider them the easiest killies to breed. They certainly are breed by a relatively large number of aquarists interested in killies though.
Australe have also been discussed a little on the AKA forum page a little while back. (We're still on the road after the AKA convention and I very cleverly left my password at home, so I haven't kept up there in the last 10 days.)
Good luck and all the best!
