Thanks for the on and off topic replies.  I'm still wondering whether 
acriflavin is safe to use not only to briefly treat eggs, but to expose 
the eggs and wigglers to for several days running.

I will be trying to set up the breeding cave without the end cap on for 
the next attempt, in case that encourages this male to guard them 
longer, but if that doesn't work, and I'm left to his role again, I'd 
like to help the eggs if a few bad ones seem ready to spoil the rest.
