[Killietalk] Re: Newbies

Hi, Harry -
I love you dearly, and respect your opinion highly, but I disagree on
your "enough discussion regarding pampering 'newbies.'"
Seems to me we don't do ENOUGH to encourage new members, and the new
members are where the club of the future will come from.
How many times have we heard of a newbie looking lost or ignored at a
show, or a relative beginner offering his talents to better the hobby, and
being either ignored or turned down flat by some old timer who can't be
bothered to think about teaching a potential future leader something about
how things are done? [Or an entrenched member who refuses to give up even a
tiny bit of his own power base, even for the benefit of the club?]
We all know that this (admittedly smoetimes unintended) cold shoulder
treatment doesn't encourage - it turns people off, to the people and the
hobby.
I say this not in reprimand to you, Harry, or to the many others who are
friendly, open, and encouraging to all, but to those who think that theirs
is the only way to do anything and refuse to consider new ideas, and who
feel that everyone else's opinions or ideas ore dirt.
And we've all run into some of those.
Hope all is well in Sunny Florida with you and Barnie and family-
Best - donna recktenwalt
