RE: [Killietalk] Re:Too many species - Not Enough breeders

Do not worry guy the species will be limited very shortly by a total ban on
the importation of all tropical and ornamental fish because they are a
thereat to our security and could contaminate our native food fish. Then the
few that are being bred will be even fewer as the Old F---s breeding them
now die off.

For somebody to touch my life is a privelege,
To touch somebodys life is an honor
but to help others to touch their own life
it is an unspeakable pleasure!

Boy I hate to respond to this, as it is only going to get misquoted,
misunderstood, and missed completely, but I have to try.
Ken asks, in his own, inimitable way, whether anybody has noticed that there
are more species "running around" than killie keepers tanks to maintain
them. Well, I have noticed that, Ken, and wrote that in an email letter to
the board when it was proposed that the AKA sponsor a collection trip to
bring in more new species. My point then was (and still is) that most AKA
members that I know all have one common problem, i.e., NO FREE TANK
SPACE!!!! More new species would have the effect of driving some of the
current species into oblivion. My claim then was to spend the money on some
more useful cause, LIKE DEVELOPING A SCHEME TO ATTRACT MORE MEMBERS, AND
ESPECIALLY YOUNGER MEMBERS.

I have suggested, and suggest again, that a simple tri-fold brochure be
created, one for each species common enough to appear in stores, that would
have a small picture of that species, the pertinent facts about raising,
feeding, breeding, collecting eggs, etc. Finish the brochure off with a
prominent mention of the AKA, Membership info, and a local AKA contact.
This is not that big a job if it gets spread around. Get one member who is
well versed in one species to fill out the brochure as best he knows about
tht species. A different member for another species, etc. A standardised
format should be made available on-line as the guide for what to fill in,
what to include, etc. Send the final product to a single source for
editing, composing, etc. to ensure a consistent procuct. I would be happy
to volunteer my services towards that end. The brochure can be listed
on-line for a pet shop to download and print on a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of
paper which they can trifold. Post these brochures by each tank of killies
in the store. I think if the AKA provided that support to shops, at least
some of them would try carrying killies. A little blurb to/for the stores
might cover items of interest to them, such as the increase in sales due to
the customers needing some smaller tanks, foods different than they sell for
their usual mollies, etc. The brochures in the hands of the younger
visitors to the shops is bound to have some effect.

So Ken, your concern was not the first, but I hope it will stir up some
activity towards getting more members, but don't hold your breath.
