It would be very simple to print a couple of pages of narrow self adhesive
labels (return address type, say in yellow color) saying "My First
Convention" or some such thing. These could be just put in a basket at the
registration desk to be taken and applied to the name tag by those first
timers who want to advertise themselves as such.

One of the problems is that we don't know who is a first time attendee
at the conventions. If chatting to those you consider friends is a
"click" then I'm guilty as one of the great things about conventions is
renewing old friendships. Of course, making new friends is important
too and I do want to meet you too. Maybe we should have a way of
identifying first time attendees that does not belittle them (different
color name tag, etc.?)
