Re: [Killietalk] RE: How important?

People don't enter fish shows for money, but for the pride of winning the trophy. Pot collectors are serious competitors. Financial considerations are usually not considerations. There's the story of the trailer park cowboy complaining about the cost of a dress for the wife or shoes for the kids, but somehow manages to afford a brand new F-250 or a bass boat.

May be a little less ranting on about the lack of entrants. Show them what
they win when they win first place.
Put some Auction bucks up for placing 1st. 2nd 3rd &4th the bucks come from
the AKA and are just a credit for the auction only.
$ 100 for 1st, $75 for 2nd $50.for 3rd and $25. for 4th. Make it worth while
to show the fish. I am sadden to say that this is 2005 and money talks and
hot air drifts on forever like :)
OK you do not like the auction cash idea how about the best in show winner
gets his pick of one of the show entrants or new and rare fish as a prize
instead.
OK you don't like that idea how about supplies the manufactures give pass
them out to the show winners.
Ok So that one is no good either how about a gas card from shell or BP or
Exxon for 100 gallons of gas.
In other words give them something for their efforts they can use and
compete for.

Just thought I might lob this stink bomb into the discussion -- How
important
is the fish show aspect of our gatherings to the listening masses out there?

While I know many will cite the difficulty of getting to our show site last
year, we can always mail in our entries and despite all of the negative
bashing of the USPS recently, this isn't like Europe where you cannot ship
fish through the mail period--the Green party took care of that. We had
about 300 entries in the "show". On the other hand, the DKG show which
occurred a week earlier, also in a remote area of Germany not considered an
especially attractive area to visit, had 600 entries. Bear in mind also
that
the summer of 2003 had been especially brutal with an alarmingly high total
of fatalities heat related. Most homes in Germany do not have summer
cooling
(air conditioning) yet their show had a banner year.

Our local shows also tend to have fewer people entering and in many cases
the
fish that are entered are only from a few individuals participating in the
KEY program and many fish entered are never auctioned.

In another sense there are fewer "senior" judges, i.e., those that can judge
all classes. While this is an artifact of the start up of the Judging
Program, newer certified judges tend to limit themselves to only a few
classes (maybe out of a sense of not being overworked or overburdened when
they are asked to judge). (Note, we are offering a FREE DVD or the AKA's
Judging Tape - Perspectives on how killies are judged, but thus far only one
individual has expressed an interest in testing to become a certified judge
during this year's Convention.) Even if you are not going to judge, it
would
be useful to maybe understand what make a good specimen and what doesn't.
We
are losing older judges, not that they are dying at great percentages, they
are saying they are just having trouble seeing the fish anymore (but you
still can't get pairing a Nothos female with Procatapus male past 'em!).

So it comes to this, don't we care anymore about the "show" aspect of our
club and national gatherings. Are these events mere shopping trips and we
only pause to checkout the "meat locker" before the buying frenzy of the
auction. Over 20 years ago I had one fellow ask after being frustrated at
not being able to buy fish through the F&E listing that if he brought a few
thousand bucks to the auction, would it be sufficient to guarantee his
getting what he wanted? Are the awards for having show winning fish no
longer worth the effort? Or...am I missing something?
