Re: [Killietalk] red worms

Those are larval chironomid (midge) larvae (a type of fly) that we in the hobby refer to as bloodworms. They are excellent food, and are ubiquitous. Any tank will eventually have them. They are harmless. Midge larvae make up more than 90 percent of the food of almost all North American native fishes, and it's likely they have this role elsewhere around the world.

Subject: [Killietalk] red worms

I recently found some red worms living in my sand. I never fed any type of live food in this tank. All I have in the tank is sponge filters, driftwood and some javamoss. The driftwood and moss was moved from another tank with fishes that I've only fed flakes and BBS.
Anyway, I'm guessing it came with some shrimps that I bought. They are red worms, about 1/2" long. They move around on the sand, with occasional twitching when it "swims". Almost like mosquito larvae. They tend to create tunnels in the sand, so that when I catch them, a long strand of sand stuck together comes along with them. I can see them stick their head(?) out and reach for flakes or pieces of moss and pulls it to their tunnel/home, so they have something that they use to grab... or maybe that's the mouth.
I picked out a few... seemed to have multiplied extremely fast. I have only added the shrimps for about a week. I fed the few to some of my sjoestedti fry and they seemed to love it.

Are they bloodworms? Are they harmful in anyway?
How can I get rid of them?

Henry
