Subject: [Killietalk] Convention Thoughts - Out of the Box
Why does the AKA Convention have to be at a hotel? In some cases, that
makes things more convenient, but are there other options?
There is some tongue-in-cheek about having Al Anderson head a convention,
but why couldn't the talks and show be at Indiana University or some other
college campus. By Memorial Day, most colleges are out on summer break and
the facilities are vacant. I'll bet there are places where you can find
excellent auditoriums, a place for the fish show, and on-campus housing are
little or no cost. We have a number of AKA members who are academicians and
they might be able to help with these arrangements. For those who need to
smoke or engage in activities that are prohibited on-campus, they can find
alternate housing at nearby hotels.
Okay, if that sounds good, what about food. I won't suggest eating on
campus, even if the cafeteria was open! But why not have the banquet(s) at
a restaurant (instead of at a hotel)? This would provide flexibility to
shop for a decent banquet room, good food, at a competitive price.
Would the above idea work? Probably, but it involves securing several
facilities instead of one. That might make it more labor intensive, which
might offset any cost savings. Nonetheless, it is an idea worth
considering.
Now, if we could find a campus right next to a major airport...
