Re: [Killietalk] Lonely hearts/ convention costs/ etc.

Hi All;
There are complaints and then there are laments. This is the latter ! The conventions are great and everyone should go at least once.. If for no other reason than to put faces on all of those names we see on Killitalk and hear of from other "Killi Nuts" or talk to on the phone while haggling/searching for that must have species. However, now that I'm here just past the end of the earth (Corpus Christi, Texas) I'm finding that travel to conventions is pretty much out of the question for someone on a fixed income.. Best $$ for a flight is $350 and when you add in the fixed costs of the convention and all of the other misc costs (not including any fish) I would be lucky to get away for under $800-$900. I am not blaming the organizing group in any way, this is just what its gotta cost in large metropoitan areas of the East Coast. But having the convention in high cost areas two years running certainly limits the number of people that can get there... And with some rumors I am hearing about 2006, is three a charm ?

I have to say, I really don't understand what the complaining is about.

Has anyone ever planned/paid for a wedding?
If you have, you know exactly how much a nice catered dinner and a
nice place to hold the event costs.
I, for one, hardly expect the AKA to absorb all those costs, and
hardly think that, given where the convention is located this year,
that the costs are all that high.

And the rest of it....
Are we expecting the AKA to pay for our plane tickets/rooms?
And certainly, that's not to say that we have to go with the options
they provide for air fare, and you can always stay in a hotel a little
way down the street...
And no-one is trying to tell you that you need to buy fish at the
auction, either..

I won't be going...I have neither the time nor the money. But I
certainly don't think that the AKA's trying to grab money from
everyone. Be grateful that you have people willing to put forth the
effort to arrange all of this for you--find a friend who's going, send
a little money with him, and have him pick some stuff up for
you--that's what I'll be doing....

Anyway, just my two cents.
