RE: [Killietalk] daphnia
Hi Bob
In the last year I had a case of "Super Ich" which turns out to be a
parasitic copepod. The life cycle has 9 or 10 stages but only the last
female is parasitic. Fish would be fine in the morning and by the afternoon
their fins would be melting and their gills oozing. Once the fish a
symptomatic euthanasia was the best thing for them as they rarely survived
formalin and or malachite green.
I purchased this drug in the dry powder (1 tsp treats ~2,000gal) and treated
everything in my fish room which contained water. Even little containers
and empty tanks!
The main thing with this particular bug is that there were large amounts of
time between outbreaks. You think your out of the woods and start moving
fish around or putting them on system and boom another out brake and whole
tanks of fish go down. The out brakes were much worse in static tanks and
for some reason tanks on system would show symptomatic fish but you would
only loose a few individuals. Static tanks were usually a 100% loss.
After 3 complete treatments I'm fairly sure the bug is out of my room. Good
riddance.
This is the best drug out there for chitin dependant organisms as it is very
effective and has a very very low toxicity to non chitin based life.

I just ordered that stuff, David, and will let everyone know if it works on
these giant ostracods.
