I was told that the vinegar of choice was apple cider vinegar with a
small pice of apple n the bottom of the container. It has always worked
great and the worms proliferated like mad.

...malt vinegar has by far the most worms growing in it. They are literally crawling up the sides of the jar and clumping. The rice vinegar is second in its number of worms followed > by the red wine vinegar and finally the cider vinegar.
