[Killietalk] Frank Marotta
Hi,
I remember Frank a bit as I lived -- and still do -- in Houston at the time. Frank always had a big list of fish for sale in the BNL each month and he was very much into the "Roloffia" species.

My sister, Rosie and I won a few goldfish at a school carnival in the 70's
in Dallas (you know, the ping pong ball in the fish bowl game). My dad
immediately bought a 10 gallon tank, pump, gravel....the whole 9 yards.
When the challenge was lost in goldfish, my dad moved into the tropical fish
arena..more tanks and a whole new world of swimmers. I can't remember if
Betta fish are tropical but my sister and I enjoyed putting mirrors up to
those fiesty guys. After he tired of tropicals, he ventured into saltwater
fish. Were those fish expensive BUT BEAUTIFUL! Two 50 gallon tanks full of
all sorts of salt water beauties: lion fish, clown fish, angelfish,
butterflyfish and anemones. Then he discovered killifish (i'm not sure
how). With no more room in the house for any more aquariums he decided to
put a huge house in our backyard to house his newfound loves, the killi's.
Of course it was hot in Dallas so a window unit air conditioner needed to be
purchased (my room upstairs next to the attic was always HOT, but the killis
needed cool, summer comfort). Anyway, in this backyard house he bred
killifish. He lived killifish. He spawned killifish. He did everything
but EAT the killifish. During my high school trips to new orleans he
ordered the driver to make stops along the swampland in Louisiana so that I
could hand pick peat moss off of the trees to use for spawning. He loved
it. Even better, the killis loved it (and I do mean LOVE) it sure worked
better than the strands of yarn he used before. Our family vacations were to
various streams in Texas and Oklahoma where we "fished" for killis. As
soon as he caught enough we could finally do something that kids actually
enjoyed doing. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly appreciated the orange and
reddish/gold coloring on a Aphyosemion Australe but not exactly bang up fun
for teenage girls. We wanted to "fish" for boys. I also remember people
from all over the world visiting Dallas for shows and even a gentleman from
Germany who had dinner with us one night. My mom made hamburgers (it must
have been saturday night because that was hamburger and Dad's Root Beer
night). The side dish of course was Frito's corn chips. Our German guest
tried to eat them with a fork. Now that was entertaining! Anyway, long
story here but I was wondering if anyone remembers my Dad. His name was
Frank Marotta and like I said, he was a member way back in the 70's and
possibly early 80's.
Thanks for your response!
Julie
