Usually it isn't good because they often add some kind of vermifuge to kill such critters. Try it and see, but don't dedicate your whole starter to it.


Cider vinegar has been traditional, but usually is really expensive.

The best is reputed to be malt vinegar, which I found was really cheap at the local semi-wholesale warehouse grocer, Smart And Final. Now all I need is for someone to mail me a damp blotter, infected with their vinegar eels. :-)
