[Killietalk] West Coast Weekend
All,
I wanted to thank everyone involved with putting on WCW 14. The speakers
were just great; In turns they were educational, funny and thought
provoking. The computer system ran as smoothly as I have ever seen at a
fish function. Thanks go out to Thuan and Jeremy for their hard work
despite being sleep deprived. Patrick Coleman out-did himself on the
Show program. If you want to see a copy, I have some extras and you can
get a look first hand how it should be done!!! :O) Barry did the video,
so watch this space for the sale announcement for the DVD coming out
sometime this year. Jim Gasior, Kit Stowell and Monty Lehman pitched in
on the judging as a last minute stop-gap measure, and Steffen Hellner
with his somewhat ribald sense of humor kept us laughing all weekend.
Allan Semeit and Tom MacLean ran the Raffle dept. I have probably
forgotten someone, but suffice it to say, I had a great crew again this
year, and despite some scheduling glitches and technical difficulties,
our goal of a relaxed friendly affair seemed to have been reached. It is
worth the long hours put into this if people leave with smiles on their
faces.
Cheers,
Northwest Killies

After 30 years I'm trying to get back into Killies. So, bear with me.
Does anyone know where I can get some melanistic Fundulus Chrysotus or
Golden Topminnow or eggs? Terry Reed

I know Fundulus Zebrinus (plains killiefish) is found as far south as
Dallas (that's where mine came from) but not sure just how far south.
they seem to be fairly widespread according to a paper I found by the
department of wildlife. And for my post hi-jacking attempt, is anyone
breeding these fish? I've had a dozen in a 10 gallon with live plants
and mops top and bottom for about 6 months now and not an egg yet. they
are comfortable and I'm feeding tons of live, frozen and processed
foods. they eat everything as it was their last meal and even come to
the front of the glass to wait for more so I don't think they're
stressed. any tips to trigger? I've tried cold water changes and warm
water changes with no luck, more and less mops, top and bottom mops and
more live plants but nothing. thanks, Kyle Oklahoma

Mites are a pest - they don't sink in the tank water and are lots of
competition for the worms wanted for food. A torch will kill off the
majority of them without melting the plastic.
After getting the worms started again start an second culture and try
to keep the competition at a minimum. Once a new culture gets going
good it is time to try to get rid of the mites completely. Get some
of the best most robust areas of the culture into enough water, a big
glass of water or a 1.5 gallon critter keeper and let the worms
settle.
Take the PURE worms off the bottom and start up a clean culture -
this time keep the competition out with screens, panty hose or what
ever - keep out the bugs and get new culture growing strong. Toss the
rest of the mess and clean things up.
A clean culture produces best, it takes a little extra time but in
the long run it pays.
Paradichlorobenzene works on the worms as much as it does on the mites.
Change as much water as often as you can!

If you have a substrate for the live plants (gravel or whatever) try
removing the adults for a few weeks and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply. The search for that fish on the net led me to what
I believe I am after....the Gulf Killifish Fundulus grandis. I've
attached a few interesting links regarding this fish. I have seen them
survive and appear to thrive in a completely fresh water aquarium, but
no breeding attempt was made. I hope to be able to spawn them
eventually.
