[Killietalk] Blackworm Flo-thru system
If any of you got theMarch 2005 issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine
you may have read the articles on live foods. One of the features was by
David Snell on his flo-thru system for keeping blackworms. David also
supplied a lot of good info on the flo-thru system for keeping fry in
the past. I have fed blackwornms in the past but never had a lot of
succes in keeping them for long periods without losing a large portion
of them before they could be fed. Also was not fond of having to rinse
them daily in efforts to keep them alive. This flo-thru setup eliminates
the need for all of this. No refrigeration and no rinsing. It is set up
similar with plastic containers holding the worms. Each container has a
supply thru the lid from the water supply header and each container has
an overflow that returns to your sump. I set mine up with four plastic
Glad 20 oz. containers. I used a 10 gallon tank as my sump and put an
outside filter on the 10 gal. tank to filter the water. I divided a 3/4
lb. package of worms into the four containers. I open my small container
supply valves all of the way to keep a good flow of water going thru
each container. The worms seem happy laying on the bottom of the
containers and waving thier tails in the air. This seems like a great
system and is much better so far than the previous method. I have had my
worms in the setup for one week now and have made one small water change
to the 10 gallon sump. I did this only as a precaution. I have not
noticed any foul odors yet. It remains to be seen how long the worms
will last in this setup, but I can tell you it is a lot nicer then
before. I would suggest that anyone who likes to feed blackworms on a
regular basis should give this setup a look see.
