RE: [Killietalk] Feeding Brine Shrimp

You may be right George. This is the first time that I've tried this.
I don't expect a crash from simply having the shrimp in the green water,
though. I have the tank illuminated 24 hours a day so there should be
no decline in dissolved oxygen at night. The culture is also aerated
with a rigid airline. What I am seeing, is that the culture is clearing
more rapidly than I expected. The shrimp are half grown now, and, so
too young to harvest. I have a powdered brine shrimp feed on hand in
case the culture goes totally clear.
I've had multiple indoor daphnia cultures going for almost two years
now. I start them in slightly green water with some sort of other food
added (crushed tetra bits, vegetable baby food, Kent Micro-Vert). The
species that I have now (D. pulex?) is very crash resistant. I have
tried more sensitive types using the same culture technique and seen
crashes.
I'll let everyone know how things progress and what kind of yield I get.
I'm thinking that if the culture becomes stable I should be able to pull
enough shrimp out to feed two or three tanks once a week. Not what the
average killie keeper would call worth wile, but I kind of like the
shrimp so If it works this culture won't be wasted space.
Cheers,
Chris
