Re: [Killietalk] Feeding Brine Shrimp

"Joseph S." <nonamethefish at gmail_com> asked:

Just curious but do the Brine shrimp kept in this manner ever produce
resting eggs?

At lower salinity, Artemia are usually live bearing. As spring rain ends water evaporates and then cools in the fall, they switch to egg laying. I'm not sure if I have cited the exact conditions that trigger the difference, but it is an environmental response, generally.

San Francisco Artemia have a very different temperature and salinity cycle than the Great Salt Lake, but I think most cysts are produced in fall, there, too, as I recall. The differences make the egg size very different, though birds assure that both places have exactly the same species resident.

Robert Nhan mentioned the ponds drying up. That is the start of a program that will end up destroying much of the Artemia ponds of the S. San Francisco Bay area. SF airport wanted to fill an edge of the bay to add more runway space. Political pressure was brought by the Green Bigot Brigade, so a compromise was reached that will damage more species than it will help, probably. The airport has bought out the leases of the brine shrimp producers and intends to return most of the salt ponds (not all) to marshland. The resultant runway would likely have less impact on the environment of the bay than this drastic action will, but when has the Sierra Club ever taken political action that didn't have unintended consequences?

Hoping for the best,

Wright
