[Killietalk] Re: Raising Artemia

Hello all,

I thought I'd chime in here about raising artemia.

When I was the aquaculture director for North Dakota State U. I kept a twenty gallon tank with salt water around 1.025 sg.

I hatched artemia cysts in an inverted 2 litre bottle then siphoned the nauplii into a brine shrimp net and transfered them to the 20 gallon.

I fed them twice a day on a slurry made from 12 oz. distilled water, 1 teaspoon of powdered spirulina (aquatic eco-systems or vitamin shop) and 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast (the baking kind). I stirred this mixture until disolved. I let it set 30 - 60 minutes to allow the yeast to activate then I poured about half the solution into the 20 gallon tank, morning and afternoon.

In about 14 days you should have adult artemia.

I did aerate the tank with a section of rigid air tubing, a light boil of air just to keep the water oxygenated. You will soon see a film of algae bgin to coat the insides of the tank. Leave it, it will act as a nitrogen sponge to absorb the waste from the artemia.

Keep the water temp around 75 degrees.

Thats it! :)
