[Killietalk] RE: Brine Shrimp Cyst Storage
In the early 90s (90-92), I was raising angelfish by the thousands to sell
to local stores. One day, my water department changed the treatment of the
water, and my pH was from that point on was ridiculously high (at least for
angels.) I decided not to raise angels there anymore (and killies for that
matter). We then moved. When we moved, I found some cans of BS cysts that I
had from the angelfish days-never refrigerated or frozen. Just good ole room
temp. I finally tapped into the last can in 2002-still had great hatches. In
fact, I had better hatches with that can than I do with some newer cysts
now. I have always stored unopened cans at room temp-if the vacuum seal pops
when you open them, they will likely be good. I then refrigerate the open
cans. At the rate I use them now, a can lasts over 6 months with no
noticeable decrease in viability.
