you add all these devices it might be easier to drill the tanks.

I tried several designs that did not lose their prime (various modifications 
of Wright's design). However, over time they all were replaced by a bulkhead 
for one reason or another. The smaller diameter siphons plugged up with Java 
moss or peat moss or some other vegetative matter. Bottom line - a bulkhead has 
never failed, although the foam plug slows down after a while if peat moss is 
in the tank.
