Less than a lot of folks think, Bro. Paul. The AKA goes by KMI4, and Ken Lazara chose to be very conservative and not redo the *gardneri*. He even left the *nigerianus* (and *obuduensis*, a synonym) as a sub-species, though most authorities, and those of us who have kept both, recognize that they really are probably a species in their own right.
Prof. Huber, in KilliData 2000, lists 4 sub-species of GAR -- *clauseni*, *gardneri*, *lacustris* and *mamfensis*. He gives *nigerianus* species status, so some old favorites, like P-82 and Makurdi, will cease to be GAR, eventually.
The genus is *Fundulopanchax*, but the sub genus they all belong to is *Paraphyosemion*. Dr. Lazara has pointed out to me that the *Paraphyosemions* have not undergone a professional review in recent years. We can probably expect some surprises when some enterprising student takes them on.
