RE: [Killietalk] Question about Orestias spp.

>Can someone direct me to current information on the status of Orestias
species in and around Lake Titicaca in Southern Peru?>

Brian

It seems Orestias spp are not a popular research subject. I only have about
25 references published since 1981.
Below are the titles I suppose would interest you the most, including a few
excerpts from the abstracts

Northcote, T. G. 2000. Ecological interactions among an Orestiid (Pisces:
Cyprinodontidae) species flock in the littoral zone of Lake Titicaca.
Advances in Ecological research, vol. 31, pp 399-420
? All four of the mechanisms proposed to account for long-term coexistence
of closely related species flocks ? are shown to apply in the littoral zone
of Puno Bay, and probably also in other parts of Lake Titicaca.

Keller, B; Soto, D., 1998. Hydrogeologic influences on the preservation of
Orestias ascotanensis Teleostei : Cyprinodontidae), in Salar de Ascotan,
northern Chile. Rev. Chil. Hist. Nat. vol. 71 (2), pp147-156.

Orestias Valenciennes, 1839 (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) and on the problem
of species identity.]. MITT. HAMB. ZOOL. MUS. INST. ERG. BD. vol. 92, pp.
381-390. (In German)
?? Successful crossbreeding resulting in numerous F super(1)-hybrids
underline the doubts in the status of intrageneric species-identity and
species-diversity.?

endangered killifish Orestias ascotanensis (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae).

Villwock,-W.; Sienknecht,-U., 1993,[Toothcarps of the genus Orestias
(Valenciennes, 1839) (Teleostei, Cyprinodontidae) from the Altiplano of
Bolivia, Chile and Peru. A Contribution to the development of their
diversity and of their intrageneric relationship.]. MITT. HAMB. ZOOL. MUS.
INST. 1993 vol. 90, pp. 321-362. (in German)
?? Some of the newest information was collected and is referred below from
alive kept Orestias of different species or "forms", respectively. (O.
luteus, O. agassii agassii and O. a. tschudii). The specimens were partly
caught from a "mixed" swarm of juveniles and brought to Hamburg (November
1991), partly they were imported as adults (August 1992), both derived from
the same site, Huatajata/Lago Pequeno, Bolivia. The first mentioned
juveniles (which were raised in the meantime to reproducing specimens) as
well as the imported adults spawned several times successfully.?

part. IV. Orestias spp., Salmo gairdneri and management problems.]. REV.
HYDROBIOL. TROP. 1989. vol. 22, no. 2, pp. 157-177. (in French)
?? O. ispi in which a male to female sex reversal is probable. Reproduction
goes on all the year round without noticeable intensity variation. Orestias
produce little batches of adhesive demersal eggs, sticked to aquatic
vegetation for at least 2 of the 6 species.?

Wurtsbaugh,-W.A.; Tapia,-R.A., 1988. Mass mortality of fishes in Lake
Titicaca (Peru-Bolivia) associated with the protozoan parasite
Ichthyophthirius multifiliis . TRANS. AM. FISH. SOC. 1988. vol. 117, no. 2,
pp. 213-217
?? killed an estimated 18 million killifish Orestias spp. in Lake
Titicaca, ?. Ichthyophthirius multifiliis was probably introduced with
exotic fishes brought to Lake Titicaca in the 1940s and 1950s.?

Also, Stan Sung wrote a short article in the May 2004 issue of TFH.

I can send you privately the whole lot of references as a word format
attachment. If you are interested, please let me know.

You will also find useful information in www.fishbase.org and
www.killi-data.org. Huber lists O. crawfordi, O. forgeti, O. ispi, O. luteus
and O. mulleri as widespread, O. cuvieri as probably extinct and all the
others as locally endangered.

Hope this helps and sorry for the long post
