[Killietalk] Expanding distribution of Nothobranchius - was hybrids

Seem to recall reading or hearing somewhere that
Nothos were sometimes carried to different pools
(aside from the efforts of mosquito control people) by
elephants that would roll in one pond/ mud hole and
then do the
same in water elsewhere. Would the distance these eggs
in mud could travel be limited by how quickly that mud
desiccated on the side of elephant? I don't imagine
that, sorting through the mud on the flanks of an
elephant, would be a popular research project. Nothos
surely will explore nearby connecting waters in the
rainy season.

Assuming that outside of parks that there aren't many
elephants migrating from place to place anymore, are
there other natural mechanisms for spreading Nothos?

Thanks and all the best!
Scott

Brian noted that
> I have revisited many Notho habitats over a period
of 18 years during which period there have been many
substantial floods in the areas in question and we
always find the same species/populations in the same
places with no evidence of mixing.
