[Killietalk] peat spawners

I am not overly familiar with Nothos and they may all spawn in similar fashion, but you have to know your South American annual's preference to be very successful. Most do well with containers that are 4 to 6 inches high, but some just won't swim up over the edge that high. I have found that Leptolebias aureoguttatus spawn a lot better in containers two inches or so high as they tend to hug the tank bottom most of the time. Camp. brucei also did better in lower containers. I also did better with lacortei and dolichopterus by placing a layer of peat on the tank bottom - they are just too lazy to go up into a bowl readily.

My Fundulosoma theirryi spawn extremely well using a community setup whereby I use a pyrex baking dish a couple inches high and 9 inches or so long. Each male stakes out his own little territory.

Contrary to what you often hear, some of my best spawns came in clear glass apothocary jars or one quart goldfish bowls. I like glass as you don't have to weight it down.
